TOP 3 PLAYLIST

Our three picks you should keep an eye (and ear) on…

FOCUS (2019)

TBH, we thought our wifi was lagging when Kim Dong Han did his “FOCUS buffering dance. This is a catchy song that shows off his fancy footwork. “FOCUS” gets stuck in your head the more you listen to it.

Also, can we add that we’re loving the visual slayage in this music video (especially that starry backdrop).

매일매일 (Everyday )

Our personal favorite from his mini-album— Kim Dong Han’s sweet vocals in “Everyday” is exactly what we’d like to listen to every day and every night.

BEBE

Kim Dong Han is a versatile artist who flawlessly moonwalks between all musical genres; he’s one of those rare unicorn male idols whose voice really matches every sort of song.

Listen to Kim Dong Han slowing things down in “BEBE.”

comethru with Jeremy Zucker

comethru with Jeremy Zucker

Happy Sunday, TasteMakers!

We’re always excited to write about our #ArtistsoftheWeek, but today, we’re especially hyped to introduce Jeremy Zucker— an emerging pop/indie artist who is defying all genre boundaries to create his own musical color.

We can say that we’re officially zuckers for the megatalented Jeremy Zucker…🙃

Since,

talk is overrated (feat. blackbear)

Let’s Get straight to our Top 5 Jeremy Zucker Essentials you can chill out to this week.

(See what I did there? 😉)

(See what I did there? 😉)

1. Bout It (ft. Daniel James & Benjamin O)

Is it possible to love a song at first listen? Cause if so, “Bout It” had us hooked the first 20 seconds and married to it by the minute mark. With its catchy beats and overall chill vibes, we’re definitely bout it. Are you?

2. comethru

“comethru” is probably the song that mainstream/Top 40s listeners best know Zucker by but it’s also that song you’ve heard at that really cool hipster cafe down the street that serves really good peach-flavored americanos (we may be projecting just a little…) but you catch our drift.

Either way, this song will definitely make any Monday morning or Wednesday night feel like a lazy Saturday afternoon.

3. all the kids are depressed

The “all the kids are depressed” lyrics are pretty hard-hitting, but it’s the music video that really drives Zucker’s message home. The music video features 6 teenagers and their stories of how depression has personally affected them. These teenagers were all casted by Zucker himself when they responded to his tweet asking followers to share their stories of dealing with depression:

Every time I read one, I felt like I was taking on the emotional labor of that person. It was important to me that those people were heard and validated in that music video.

-Jeremy Zucker for Billboard, June 2018

4. Stay With Me (FEAT. jEREMY zUCKER)

“Stay with me” starts off slow like a Sunday morning and picks up the tempo by the first 20 seconds to end with a bam (not unlike our Saturday nights).

We’re also loving the dreamy, sunset pier aesthetic in this video— a 12/10.

5. Melody

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to find an official music video or lyric video for “Melody” but that just shows us how much of an underrated gem it is.

Jeremy Zucker is a self-aware musician; he knows the styles and colors that best accentuate his strengths as an artist. He also tells his story genuinely and organically through his songs. These may be just some of the reasons he is such a powerhouse artist to look forward to.

Have we convinced you to stan Jeremy Zucker yet? Have you officially been zuckered? 😉

Golden Child: One in a 100

Golden Child: One in a 100

First off, what does “Golden Child” stand for?

In traditional Asian folklore, “Golden Child” is the perfect person born once every 100 years. According to Woollim Entertainment (Golden Child’s label), these 10 boys were named in the hopes that Golden Child would become that perfect group and lead the Korean music industry for the next 100 years.

THEIR A.K.As…

Also endearingly called, GNCD or Golcha by fans, Golden Child is an artist that should definitely be on your radar.

If you’re new to the Goldenness (골드니스) fandom or looking for a new group to stan, look no further!

Here are three Golcha songs to welcome you into the GOLDENNESS world!

In no particular order…

1. DamDaDi (담다디)

Okay, so if you’re getting ready to stan any group for the first time, the logical place to start would be their debut song. For all the potential-Goldenness reading this, Golden Child’s debut song was the exceptionally catchy “DamDaDi.”

DamDaDi should come with its own disclaimer as it was stuck in our head for the next 13 hours after our first listen (only a slight exaggeration).

*Please be aware: if you’re currently studying for finals, listen to DamDaDi at your own discretion…

2. LET ME

We think “LET ME” best exemplifies Golcha’s bright, boyish and catchy sound. “LET ME” is a bubbly, feel-good song that’ll get you and anyone else in the room/car up and dancing in no time.

3. LADY

To show off Golden Child’s genre versatility, we wanted to include “LADY” in this crash course on Golcha. The first time we heard this song, we were instantly reminded of an INFINITE song. However, Golcha always adds their own unique, boyish charms and colors to their music which sets them apart from their labelmates.

tumblr_ove750n2uh1qbz8uzo1_400.gif

This was one of the toughest Top 3 lists for us to write because we had a difficult time deciding between all of Golcha’s title songs…

But, if you make to bring Golden Child to your city, you just may be able to hear all their title songs live!

wink wink, nudge nudge 😉🔻🔻

그러다 봄 (Spring Again)

Tiffany Young: From KPOP Princess to Pop Queen

Tiffany Young: From KPOP Princess to Pop Queen

Our Artist of the Week is a young lady who is redefining her image, her story and her identity through her music. As 1/9th member of one of the most established and iconic girl groups, Girls’ Generation rewrote history and ruled a historically male-dominated industry in Asia.

Now, Tiffany Young, previously known as SNSD’s (Pink-Brighter-Than-Mushrooms-Eye-Smile-Princess) Tiffany, is trailblazing her way through the global pop scene and rewriting history for a second time.

Let’s take a look at how Tiffany is transforming herself from KPOP Princess to Pop royalty.

Not Barbie

There’s a certain strength that comes from letting yourself be open and vulnerable with your internal insecurities and pain. Tiffany shows us this in “Not Barbie” by being candid about her struggles. In her own words:

Being positively true to yourself, body and soul, is the most beautiful thing. There’s nothing else. I wanted to be able to say that very, very boldly because of the K-pop background. Because of the Asian background. I think it’s a story that relates to everyone. Any woman or man, or girl or boy, of color, of shape or form or condition, you name it. I always wanted to write something that would be uplifting.”

-Tiffany Young for Billboard, April 2019

BORN AGAIN

Girls’ Generation started from the bottom; performing in front of black oceans and stadiums filled with more antis than fans. Eventually, through hard work and perseverance, they rose their way to the top. For Tiffany to leave behind the comfy and posh life as one of Korea’s top girl groups and start over— from the bottom— was a huge moment of courage.

“Born Again” was a fitting song to mark her rebirth. Not as SNSD’s Tiffany, but as Tiffany Young.

OVER MY SKIN

A major departure from the cutesy and bubblegum pop signature sound present in SNSD’s greatest hits, Tiffany croons a sultry “Because I’m owning what’s mine, confident I know I look good, babe” message of confidence in this bop.

Lips On Lips

THIS SONG IS SO ADDICTING!

The entire Lips On Lips EP is a bop after bop marathon and it played a vital role in redefining Tiffany as a Pop Queen who’s here to slay.

Keep in mind that this is her debut mini album, but with a tracklist where all the b-sides sound like title tracks, you know that it’s a solid one.

Top 3 Alan Walker Songs

Top 3 Alan Walker Songs

Dear TasteMakers,

As the weather gets a little warmer, we’re approaching peak EDM and Hip hop festival season in Korea and all around the world.

That’s why today we’ll be diving headfirst into the world of EDM with Alan Walker. In addition to his hauntingly-catchy hits, Walker is probably also well-known for his trademark mask he wears in hopes that his audience will focus solely on his music rather than himself.

Come along with us as we explore our Top 3 Alan Walker songs.

1. On My Way

Alan Walker x Sabrina Carpenter x FaRruko

Any PUBG players here?

Then, I’m pretty sure you’re familiar with this tune as it serves as PUBG’s one-year anniversary theme song. Featuring American singer, Sabrina Carpenter, and Puerto Rican singer, Farruko, “On My Way,” always gets me pumped up for battle and ready to bring home some winner, winner chicken dinner!

2. FADED

No Alan Walker post would be complete without “Faded”, the hit single that thrusted an 18-year-old Alan Walker into the spotlight back in 2015.

Walker came from humble beginnings; he didn’t receive any professional producing or songwriting training but rather, taught himself by watching YouTube tutorials and receiving feedback from groups on Facebook and Reddit.

Unlike its name, almost five years after its release, “Faded” is still bringing in shining accolades: with more than 2.2 billion YouTube views and 15 million likes, it is one of YouTube’s top 20 most liked videos of all time. “Faded” also boasts more than 780 million Spotify plays, and received the 2015 Spellemann Award for Hit of the Year (*Spellemannprisen is also known as the Norwegian Grammy Awards).

3. Lily

 K-391 & Emelie Hollow

Three steps to enjoy “Lily”: 1) Close your eyes, 2) Appreciate Emelie Holow’s hauntingly beautiful voice interweaving with Alan Walker’s entrancing electronic synth melody, and 3) Be taken to a different metaphysical realm.

Honorable Mentions:

4. Are You Lonely (feat. ISÁK)

Steve Aoki & Alan Walker

5. All Falls Down (feat. Noah Cyrus with Digital Farm Animals)

Make Alan Walker now and get ready to dance those warm summer nights away!

The 4 Seasons of Park Bom

The 4 Seasons of Park Bom

Dear TasteMakers,

Today’s Artist of the Week is bringing the “FIRE” this “SPRING”. She’s a fierce and talented lady who “YOU & I” both know is a digital-chart killer. Although she’s been on somewhat of a hiatus for the past eight years, “DON’T CRY”, because she’s back now to “CRUSH” her competition.

Park Bom (Queen Bom) says hello 👋

Park Bom (Queen Bom) says hello 👋

Without further ado, here are four Park Bom songs to soundtrack and accompany you all year round.

SPRING

Spring (봄)

This one was too easy, wasn’t it? In the spring, you definitely need to listen to Park Bom’s “SPRING.”

This comeback was a highly personal yet bittersweet one to her; for starters, “SPRING” is Park Bom’s first solo comeback in eight years and it featured 2NE1 bandmate, Sandara Park. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that the title, music video, imagery and lyrics all have symbolic meaning in their own respective ways.

But, perhaps all these separate pieces weave together to show that although she may be ready for this new season in her life, she’ll always have a deep appreciation for her roots and where she came from.

SUMMER

SHAMEFUL (창피해)

Fake (ex)friends beware, Bom is coming for you in “SHAMEFUL.” The upbeat rhythm further embellishes the IDGAF lyrics and overall message of the song. “SHAMEFUL” will dually serve as your summer dance and empowerment anthem.

FALL

MY LOVER (내연인)

Fall = ballads, no doubts about it.

Fall is the season for ballads and “MY LOVER” can definitely compete with even the most seasoned fall ballad favorites.

WINTER

YOU AND I

Gahhh, one of my favorite 00s KPOP songs of all time. I can actually still recall where I was exactly when I listened to “YOU & I” for the very first time.

Everything about this song, from the intro to the lyrics and music video are a 10/10 for me.

BTW: Any BLACKJACKs here remember Bom’s legendary “YOU & I” NOLZA performance with her older sister accompanying her on the cello? ➡️

parkbomspring2.gif

Bom is planning to once again grace us with another hit song this spring featuring MAMAMOO’s Wheein. This Wheein x Bom collab is set to drop on May 2nd.

If you wanna hear her new discography along with some of her classics LIVE in your city, be sure to make her now!

Groovy Everywhere: An (Un)helpful Intro to GroovyRoom

Groovy Everywhere: An (Un)helpful Intro to GroovyRoom

Dear TasteMakers,

Today I get to introduce you to one of my personal favorite producer duos in the Korean RnB/Hip Hop scene.

Like the intellectuals you are, I’m sure you’ve heard of the DJ signature sound, “Groovy Everywhere” at the beginning of some of the littest(?) songs.

GroovyRoom has worked with some of the major movers and shakers in the K-RnB/K-Hip Hop world— Jay Park, Dok2, Heize, Suran, Crush, Sik-K, Hyolyn, Babylon, and Younha— just to name a few.

So let’s get to know this power duo a little better; here’s your (un)helpful intro to GroovyRoom.

1. They’re regular producers on the survival hip hop show, High School Rapper

They mentored season 2 winner, HAON, and led him to his victory. We were also fortunate enough to get some legendary GROOVYROOM x HAON ear candy such as “BOONG BOONG” (take a listen below and thank me later 🙃).

2. They’re building their YouTube following by uploading candid and well-edited (crack-like video) content

Vlogs

Skits

3. They love what they do and keep a fun and light-hearted work environment

One of the reasons their songs are such feel-good beats is because these guys have so much fun when they work and genuinely love what they do. As Gyujeong shared in one of his Instagram lives, he never set out to become a producer, but it became a natural path simply because he enjoyed producing and making music.

4. They’re signed to H1GHER MUSIC and often collaborate with their labelMATES

These are the collabs of the century you probably didn’t even realized you needed until now.

Make sure you turn on CC for English subs.

“Sunday”

Feat. Park Jae-Bum, Heize

“iffy”

SiK-K, pH-1, Jay Park (prod by. GroovyRoom)

“TODAY (오늘은)”

NELL X GroovyRoom

True to their DJ signature sound, GroovyRoom shows off their mastery of all genres, spreading their catchy grooves everywhere.

Personally, it always sounds like there’s a lot of layering going on in GroovyRoom’s music and it’s a testament to their keen producing eye that they’re able to discern and match artists to songs/beats that’ll complement them.

5.Contrary to popular belief, they don’t (can’t*) usually rap or sing in their music

No shade intended 😅

As musically-gifted as they are, neither Gyujeong nor Hwimin sing or rap in their songs. But for your viewing pleasure, here’s Hwimin trying his best (starting at 0:23).

Be sure to bring these guys to your city and get your groove on!

Make GroovyRoom now.

What If

“What If” has been stuck in my head ever since I first heard it. It is such an underappreciated bop. I dare you not to sing along to the catchy “I know you know, what if I told you I liked you. We stay, we go, what if I told you I liked you. I know you, you know, what if….” chorus.

Deep Down

Fun fact: “Deep Down” was written by one of Johnny’s talented sisters, Darian Orlando, as well as Casey Smith and Nick Ruth who have worked with stars like OneRepublic, Olivia O’Brien, Carly Rae Jepsen and Kelly Clarkson.

Sleep

Sleep was written by Johnny along with his team of songwriters: Linnea Södahl, Hampus Lindvall, and Darian Orlando. This song was also the origin of the “Sleep on beds, don’t sleep on Johnny Orlando!” campaign 😜
